Inclusive and Supportive Education Congress
1st - 4th August 2005. Glasgow, Scotland
about the conference
HRH The Princess Royal
I am very pleased to be a patron of ISEC 2005 and to welcome you all to Glasgow for this important event. This is the first time that ISEC has come to Scotland and I am sure that you will all enjoy the conference, the city and our country. ISEC 2005 provides an opportunity for people from all over the world to get together to discuss the educational issues surrounding disability and learning problems.
I would like to explain to you what my attitude to disability and handicap is. I believe that disability is only a handicap in other people's minds. For me it was not a question of breaking through my "handicap" and then competing with "normal" people. I have never considered myself as anything other than a "normal" person in the first place. My framework of belief that the difficulties I experience with my ears have no significant effect on my musical ability is a greater gift than being able to play percussion instruments well.
The reason that this conference is so important is that you, as individuals, are in a position to directly influence the development of the world's framework of understanding about children and young people with disabilities.
I am sorry that I can't be with you this week but I wish you well in your discussions and debates. I sincerely hope that the result of this conference will be a clearer understanding of how to include and support children and young people in the world's educational systems.
